Hidden Gem Alert: Why Little Lokum in Brunswick Deserves a Spot on Your Weekend List

Tucked away in a Brunswick side street, Little Lokum serves up smoky mezze, char-grilled kebabs, and a künefe worth saving room for. We paid a visit to see if the hype holds up.

If you've spent any time scrolling through our directory, you know Melbourne's halal food scene is bursting at the seams with options. But every now and then, a place comes along that makes you stop scrolling and just go. This week, that place is Little Lokum, a cosy Turkish-Mediterranean eatery tucked into a side street in Brunswick.

First Impressions

Little Lokum doesn't try too hard to impress you from the outside. There's a hand-painted sign, a couple of mismatched outdoor tables, and the unmistakable smell of charcoal grilling wafting onto the footpath. Inside, it's warm without being fussy, with exposed brick, low pendant lighting, and a communal table down the middle that practically begs you to bring the whole family.

We visited on a Saturday evening and the place was buzzing, always a good sign. Every table seemed to have at least one shared mezze platter going, and the open kitchen let us watch the chefs work the grill in real time.

What We Ordered

Mixed Mezze Platter

Hummus, muhammara, and smoky baba ganoush, all made in-house and served with warm, pillowy pide bread. The muhammara (a walnut and roasted capsicum dip) was the standout: smoky, slightly sweet, with just enough chilli kick to keep you reaching for more.

Adana Kebab

Hand-minced lamb, char-grilled over open flame, served with a tangle of sumac onions and a side of bulgur pilaf. Juicy, well-spiced, cooked exactly as ordered.

Iskender Kebab

Thin-sliced lamb over pide, blanketed in tomato sauce and a generous pour of warm butter, finished with a dollop of garlicky yoghurt. This is comfort food at its finest, rich and indulgent, and worth sharing (though we didn't want to).

Künefe. We couldn't leave without dessert. The shredded pastry was crisp on top, gooey with cheese underneath, and soaked in just the right amount of sugar syrup. Paired with a scoop of pistachio ice cream, it was the perfect way to end the meal.

Little Lokum isn't reinventing Turkish cuisine, and it doesn't need to. What it does, it does with care: quality ingredients, generous portions, and a menu that feels built for sharing with people you love. Prices sit in the mid-range, making it a solid choice for a casual date night or a family dinner without the fine-dining price tag.
